DRX Spinal Decompression Spinal decompression is computer-driven targeted traction to the spine used to “decompress” the intervertebral discs by pulling the vertebrae away from each other. Spinal traction has been used for over 50 years to treat bulging discs in the lower back or neck. Normally traction used 20 lbs and doesn’t overcome the muscles and ligaments holding the vertebrae together, especially in patients with muscle spasm. We use the DRX unit with our patient’s upper body held in place by a vest and arm rests, and a belt around the waist connected to a computerized pulling motor. The angle of pull is varied depending on the level of disc to be distracted (decompressed). Each treatment takes about 30 minutes and other physical medicine modes are used to enhance the effect, such as massage and electrical stimulation. The success rate here is about 65%. For neck discs, a special headrest is used and the pull is from above the head. Our success rate with cervical disc problems is better, at about 75%. To learn
