Neck Pain

Neck pain only is rarely treated surgically. Fusions for arthritic joints in the neck usually doesn’t help the pain and only makes the neck less mobile. A lot of tension can occur in neck muscles subconsciously, under stress, causing neck pain. Serious things like fractures, tumors, or infection need to be ruled out, but most neck pain is treated with physical medicine and rehabilitation, along with pain pills and muscle relaxants.

Occasionally a large midline disc herniation causes neck pain only. For more on that, click on the section on Cervical Disc Herniation.
