Walking Limited

Inability to walk without leg pain or numbness can be due to a condition in the lower back called lumbar spinal stenosis.

Other things can cause walking difficulty, such as vascular insufficiency to the legs or Parkinson’s disease. The typical patient with spinal stenosis may not have a lot of back pain, but has to stop frequently to rest. Sometimes sitting or hunkering down will relieve the leg pain or numbness so that walking can resume. Some will actually get weak in the legs and progress to using a cane, then a walker, and maybe even a wheel chair.

If the problem is due to spinal stenosis, it can be treated without too much risk in most patients. They should not progress to needing a walker or a wheel chair before having something done.
